As Obama takes his first steps as President, some voices are predicting that the financial crisis foreshadows the demise of U.S. leadership in the world.

These dire predictions, focused on the immediate weaknesses of America, overlook the long-run conditions, according to a German specialist, that have enabled the United States to remain the major global power since World War II.

A reminder of these fundamentals is available in a forthcoming European Affairs article , “America – with its Unique Resilience – Remains the Indispensible Power” by Dr. Heinrich Kreft, a German career diplomat who is currently a senior foreign policy advisor to the conservative CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the German Bundestag. His article is already available on the website of the European Institute.
